MEETUPS & EVENTS
Getting together on a regular basis can be hard as a filmmaker. I wanted to highlight what I view as some of the best reoccurring opportunities to connect with fellow filmmakers or cinephiles and, more importantly, build continuing relationships rather than just one-off meetings.
Midwest Independent Film FestivalThough it seems like this is obviously something that should belong in the "film festival" category, the Midwest Independent Film Festival's strength is in the mere fact that this is a monthly festival. Though the films screened aren't always of the quality they should be (particularly the narrative features), the afterparty is worth attending because it brings together various members of the community. Look out for Female Filmmaker night, which is consistently the best night of the year, as well as the end of the year gala. Now under new leadership, they are definitely on the way up.

Elevated Films ChicagoSimilar to the Midwest Independent Film Festival, Elevated Films could fit under multiple categories as it is also a non-profit organization and summer screening series. That said, the strongest part of Elevated in my opinion is the reoccurring discussion aspect that is essential in a strong community, treating film as an art form and experience. It is also a great chance to see Sundance and SXSW-level films (often with prominent filmmakers in attendance) on a cool rooftop with drinks.

CAFMChicago Acting in Film is one of the older organizations and meetups in the city. Having not had much experience with them personally, they seem like a great opportunity for actors to connect with their peers and learn from that aspect of the film community. Though I am skeptical of the varying levels of talent that attend such events, it may be a good chance for directors to find actors for a project.

Martini Shot!A newer meetup, Martini Shot! is a great chance for production people to meetup with one another and discuss projects and work opportunities. Sponsored by Magnanimous Media, this meetup often features raffles with some pretty great prizes (such as equipment and rental discounts) as well as opportunities to screen work. Free drinks are also a plus.

ISA ChicagoISA (International Screenwriting Association) has begun monthly meetups in various cities for screenwriters looking to connect - particularly for newer screenwriters. Their website also has many interesting opportunities and tips for writers. In my limited experience attending, this meetup was a little more structured and formal but may have loosened up since.
